Rembrandt Van Rijn (1606-1669) is a famous Dutch painter and etcher. In European art, he is considered as one of the greatest painters and also the most important in Dutch history. Both his paintings and etching were popular throughout his lifetime even though at his later year he experienced lots of personal tragedy and financial hardship. For more than 20 years, he taught the important younger generation Dutch painters. In his works, he exhibits the knowledge of classical iconography, which he used as a model to for the requirement of his own experience. It is also because of his empathy for human conditions that he was called one of the great prophets of civilization. During his painting career, Rembrandt took on portraits, narrative paintings and landscape as his primary themes and subjects. It is the narrative paintings in which he was mostly praised due to the biblical stories portrayed and also both the emotion and details in the work.
