Series Spotlight: Floating Stones by Jeff Friesen
Artists often develop a signature style in which to focus a full series around. In the case of Jeff Friesen’s black and white photography collection, “Floating Stones”, he followed inspiration found in the geologic wonders of nature.
Taken in Nova Scotia, Jeff’s photos of large rocks and stones against still waters beautifully depict both the stillness and grandiosity of the natural world. Committed to capturing this sense of calm, Jeff spent days awaiting the perfect windless moments. The result is a collection of 14 serene scenes, some of which flew off IKEA’s shelves as bestsellers.
“It’s always worth waiting when the calm moments finally arrive. By taking away the wind…something unearthly is revealed: a world where stones float and skies can be stepped in.”
Jeff Friesen
Struck by Hurricane Noel in 2007, his stone subjects were rearranged in mere hours demonstrating the ever-changing power of nature. Influenced by this “sound lesson in permanence” found in the peninsula’s granite barrens, Jeff’s black and white photography series offers both emotional depth, calming reflection, and a feeling of zen.
