Celebrating Time Travel in Art

If you could travel in time, would you go to the future or the past? Whenever you’d go, every year on December 8 we’re encouraged to imagine we can take those trips. This year to celebrate Pretend to be a Time Traveler Day, we’re looking at how artists play with time travel on canvas.

Whether you’d prefer to head back to when dinosaurs roamed in the land before time, see what future generations are up to, or just meander casually through the big ball of wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff, each trip is sure to be an adventure. It’s no wonder this theme is the basis for so many sci-fi stories across pop culture. This potential for such mysterious journeys is also great inspiration for many artists.

While the innumerable destinations alone are enough inspiration, the ability to control time itself is another fascinating concept for artists to portray. From traveling cities and cosmic sloths to electrified DeLoreans and enchanted sailboats, artists get creative with addressing the “how”.
