Ashvin Harrison: Watch This Artist’s Charcoal Drawing Splatter Paint Technique
Knowing the process behind your art makes it that much more special. We’re proud to partner with Ashvin Harrison, whose charcoal drawings with vivid splatters of color results in stunning displays full of movement and energy.
Ashvin first discovered his love of splatter painting after mistakenly dropping acrylic paint onto a charcoal drawing. Thrilled by the outcome of this happy accident, he’s since continued to use this in his artistic process. While his work contains bold colors, he opts to always leave the background white, aiming to “represent life as just a split second of existence with no start, end or great sense of time or place”. This draws focus to the subject without anything distracting behind it. Then, once he adds those bold splashes of hues to his art, his piece comes to life with expressions of “movement, beauty, and emotion”.

Starting with a simple outline of his subject (in this case, a tree), he uses a unique technique of paint brushing charcoal dust to fill in all the details. He then tapes off the trunk and branches of the tree to block them from the incoming color. Using a textured sponge, he blots a couple different colors onto the tree to create the magnificent leaves. Then, color by color, he splatters paint onto the canvas by flicking a paintbrush. This splattering technique leaves a range of dots and lines across the canvas, making for an interesting scene.
With some of his other pieces, he starts out with the same charcoal technique, but then he brushes on acrylic paint to bring the subject to life. With carefully calculated brushstrokes and a couple different shades of a color, he adds dimension and details to the piece. Then, he flicks the paintbrush to add those same lively splatters, bringing in some captivating movement.
Depending on what he’s working on, he sometimes includes additional methods and techniques to give his work some extra pizazz. Whether it’s using a blow torch to melt the paint across the canvas, using a small fan to give the paint a cool dripping effect, or simply having fun dancing while splattering his paintbrush, it always results in an eye-catching and exciting painting.
As a result, his creative technique of paint brushing charcoal dust, splattering colors, and other innovative methods of moving the paint around the canvas can help add energetic and expressive vibes to your space.
