Artists to Know: 10 Black Artists to Discover
In honor of Black History Month, we’re continuing to celebrate Black artists by featuring 10 more creators this week. iCanvas would be nothing without our diverse family of creators, and we’re proud to play a role in increasing representation of artists who are historically underrepresented across the industry. From musical inspirations to cultural explorations, these 10 Black artists all use their art as a form of powerful expression. Filled with a range of strong emotions and meaningful messages, these artists are committed to stirring up conversations about race and representation through their work.

1. EttaVee
EttaVee creates bold and vibrant designs full of energy and excitement. Upon moving to Paris, she instantly brightened up her surroundings through her fine art pieces. Taking inspiration from “life in France, travel adventures, tropical settings, colorful fruit and pop culture”, she aims to make art filled with expressive optimism. With such eye-catching hues and cheerful vibes, it’s no wonder that her social media following continues to rapidly grow.

2. Gregory Prescott
Based in Los Angeles, Gregory Prescott is a self-taught photographer who strives to broaden the cultural spectrum through his expressive images of the male and female form. Showcasing the beauty of the human shape with an array of skin tones, he wants viewers to “witness the essence, sensuality, strong structure and power of the body.” By highlighting sexuality, race, body types, and more through his graceful fine art photography, he works to expand diversity in art and media.

3. Edú Marron
Brazilian multi-artist Edú Marron takes inspiration from blues, rock, and jazz music to create colorful and energetic art. Using “psychedelic shapes” in his work, his prints give off an exciting retro vibe. From famous musical legends like Freddie Mercury and Elvis to pop culture icons like Wonder Woman, his artwork is filled with personality. 4. David Coleman Jr.
Based in Philadelphia, David Coleman Jr.’s mixed media portraits feature the female form and convey the beautiful strength of women. Focusing mainly on ‘bold shape language, expressive textures, and harmonious color palettes”, his striking prints reveal emotional vulnerability. From close-ups of serene faces to multicolored movement to nude freedom, his artwork can bring empowering energy and radiant texture to any space.

5. Amanda Whitehurst
Florida native Amanda Whitehurst is a self-taught artist who creates portraits showing “the beauty, strength, and inspiration of black and brown women.” Influenced by other Black women, her digital illustrations display stylish females with confident and fierce energy. From prints showcasing body positivity to fashion forward ladies, her artwork is a great way to inspire emboldening, feminine vibes.

6. Edo
Edo is a self-taught Chicago artist who creates an eclectic variety of prints with a wide range of brilliant color schemes and objects. Featuring a mix of symbols connected together like a mosaic puzzle, his artwork gives off a full spectrum of emotions. Growing up in a family surrounded by addiction and dealing with the uncertainties of foster care, his pieces reflect his personal struggles and life obstacles in hopes of making a connection with each viewer. The vibrant hues and vulnerability of his artwork has the power to add urban energy to any space.

7. Akintayo Akintobi
Akintayo Akintobi is an impressionist painter from Lagos, Nigeria. Filled with vivid colors and unique motifs, his art mainly features recurring themes of African culture, stories, and the economy, along with the deep range of human emotions. From the nude female form to expressions of faith to displays of healing the Earth, he hopes his art serves as “therapy for people to find comfort” and provides opportunities to shift people’s world views.

8. Joachim McMillan
Using an impressionistic style, Joachim McMillan’s paintings are a reflection of “the multi-faceted nature of the world in which we live.” His vibrantly colored and textured artwork is a result of growing up in the Caribbean Islands of Grenada and taking inspiration from the extraordinary scenes around him. From glorious gardens to eye-catching sailboats to powerful messages of justice, his artwork is filled with energetic details that give off bold and uplifting vibes.

9. Lorintheory
Based in Central Florida, Lorintheory’s illustrations are inspired by “love, light, people of color, and nature”. Her prints showcase a range of uplifting and enthralling themes such as self-care, relationships, and fascinating animals. 10. Arm of Casso
Atlanta-based artist Arm of Casso uses his mixed medium portraits as portrayals of cultural expression. He creates art as a way to “show people that Black people have real intellect and skills” and to represent his community in a creative light. Featuring famous Black musicians, rappers, and influential leaders, his mix of sharp lines and shapes results in a striking appearance with powerful and introspective vibes. His eye-catching art has been featured in Vibe Magazine and has also been shown in art venues such as Art Basel Miami and T.I.’s Trap Museum.
