4 Artists Exploring Motion

These four artists dive into motion in their art in four different ways. Given their unique life experiences and artistic journeys, we’d expect nothing less! From energetically melodic to dramatically expressive, we’re taking a look at how each creator explores this physical sensation in their static creations.

From the wind tousling your hair as you run down the block to birds flapping their wings majestically towards the sky, movement is all around us. Because feeling motion is a 3D experience, it’s especially eye-catching when artists portray it in their 2D styles. Whether it’s a person dancing with their arms in the air, a car racing down the road, or a moment frozen in time, artists find many creative ways to emulate the feeling of action. From bodies of water cascading towards the shore to splashes of sound waves flying through the air, these four artists explore motion and play with our senses in a variety of ways.

No matter if the artwork is full of liveliness or contains more subtle and swift movements, each of these creators showcase their subjects differently. From textured finger paintings to coastal photography, keep scrolling to find a new favorite artist.

1. Ashvin Harrison

Passionate about examining the human condition, Australian artist Ashvin Harrison creates charcoal and acrylic paintings of trees, people, and everyday objects with splashes of color. By juxtaposing colorful abstract splatters coming out of black and white instruments, he shows us what sound looks like with the movement of noise particles flying through the air. By making these chaotic bursts emerge from horns, strings, and piano keys, he provides the illusion that the music is being played and we can even imagine a tune in our heads.

From a lively guitar solo to a brightly animated jazzy saxophone, we think his artwork can be a great way to fill your space with an energetic and melodic spirit.

2. Iris Scott

Residing in New Mexico, Iris Scott’s finger paintings feature a mix of surreal landscapes, lifelike animals, urban scenes, and complex figurative compositions. Using textural splatters, she depicts canines shaking off water with their fur whipping around in the air to highlight the lively, adventurous, and playful spirit of these loyal pets. Positioning each of her subjects in an actionable pose, we can see the flapping of the pups’ ears as they flick the wetness off their bodies while the droplets fly around them.

From a labrador retriever drying off from a moonlight swim to a boxer with its large jowls in mid motion, we think her artwork can be a fun way to celebrate your love of these furry friends with a refreshing dose of energetic vibes. If her exciting paintings look familiar, you may have seen her work covered by Forbes, New York Magazine, Smithsonian, Artnet and countless others.

3. Penny Warden

British artist Penny Warden creates paintings of people and horses with spontaneous yet deliberate splashes of vibrant colors. Honing in on the human figure, she uses swipes of paint around faceless subjects in action to reveal all the beautifully diverse ways we are able to move around and the strong emotional impact of body language. By showing them with their arms up in the air, in gymnastic poses, or with their hips twisted, she places further emphasis on performative motions.

From a female spinning in a flowing dress to a dancer moving with pizazz, we think her artwork can be an interesting way to bring expressive vibes to your space with a touch of drama.

4. Sean Davey

Hawaii-based artist Sean Davey’s photography features a mix of coastal scenes, surfers, and beaches across the world. Focusing on the movement of the water, he photographs ocean waves and splashes as they happen in real time, drawing attention to the incredible power of natural motion that exists in our world. By capturing the curves breaking onto the shore, the foaming of the water, and often the reflection of the sun, he pulls us in and makes us relish the majestic sights.

From waves fanning the orange glow in the sky to a frosty curl heading towards the coastline, we think his photos can help you bring the thrill and beauty of the big blue into your space.
